I can count myself lucky: My daily bike ride to work takes me along the river Sihl in Zurich, and the majestic plane trees near the Sihlhölzli area never cease to amaze me. These «London planes» or «hybrid planes» (species name «platanus x acerifolia») were planted in 1927. In daylight, they are simply majestic and impressive trees, serenely guiding people along their way. But as night falls, they take on a completely different personality and seem to come alive. Are these still branches or rather moving tentacles of a giant squid, waiting for the perfect moment to grasp you?
