Linda Jamieson School of Dance's profile

A Brief History of the Royal Ballet Company

Established more than 30 years ago in Ottawa, the Linda Jamieson School of Dance offers classes for students at the recreational level as well as classes for students wishing to make a career out of dance. Students from the Linda Jamieson School of Dance have gone on to become professional dancers with the Royal Ballet Company in London, England.

The Royal Ballet Company is widely considered one of the greatest ballet companies in the world. It began as a small company and school assembled in 1926 by Dame Ninette de Valois. The company went on to perform at London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre in 1931 and became known as the Vic-Wells Ballet Company (later renamed the Sadler’s Wells Ballet Company). During World War II, the company toured throughout Great Britain, entertaining Allied troops. In 1946, the company transferred to the Royal Opera House in London’s Covent Garden, where it is still based today. It was renamed the Royal Ballet in 1956.

Artistic director Kevin O’Hare leads the Royal Ballet. O’Hare studied at the Royal Ballet School and went on to perform throughout the United Kingdom and internationally as principal with Sadler’s Wells Royal Ballet, the sister company to the Royal Ballet. He retired from his performance career in 2000 and joined the Royal Ballet as company manager in 2004. In 2009, he was appointed administrative director and assumed the role of company director in 2012.
