Reconstructed Red Packets (Ang Bao)

Reconstructed Red Packets, 2017

Red Packets are used primarily to bless people with money during Chinese New Year, they come in varying designs which usually feature the chinese zodiac for the lunar new year and are commonly made in shades of red and adorned with gold foil. They are often commissioned and given out by different organisations (banks, supermarkets, beer companies, government institutions, schools etc.) accompanying the purchase of items or the usage of services.

These reconstructed red packets were designed by its production process by inheriting properties commonly seen in a typical red packet — colours in shades of red and orange, specks of gold foil and textured paper — in different ways unique to each envelope.

Red envelopes, or hongbao, are commonly given away (or received) during festive seasons like weddings and Chinese New Year.
