Paper Entomology
Material Exploration
Using the accuracy and precision of laser cutting technology, my aim was to shed light on the fragility of paper through production of to-scale insect sculptures — a Cicada, a Feather-Horned Beetle, and a Thread-Lacewing.

Replicating insects through simplified forms for the body, while retaining detail in the wings and antennae, allows one to focus on and appreciate the delicate structure of the paper — held together by miniscule fibres. One can also comprehend the boundaries of paper under the hands of the machine, at risk of burning up under the laser’s intense heat. As a result, a balance between the harshness of the laser and the delicacy of the paper is made apparent.
