It is believed that during World War II, the practice of steganographic knitting was carried out in order to pass on secret messages. Messages were known to take the form of Morse code, written on the yarn and then knitted into pieces of clothing that were worn by a courier. Playing on the idea of such secretive methods of communication, Knitwit creates irony by showcasing carefully knitted pieces that are in actual fact nonsensical tweets from real twitter accounts, translated into binary code, and then into stitches. While majority of the tweets are a complete joke, the minority is more carefully considered.

Knitwit begins to provoke questions around the messages we send to the public, particularly across social media platforms — Is it really worth sending? Does it mean anything? Is it of any importance?
