May Day
Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green festival has turned the May Day Bank Holiday weekend into one of the most important and eagerly anticipated dates in the seaside resort of Hastings events calendar.
In an extraordinary collage of colour and movement, a continuous stream of dancers, drummers and performers make their way through the narrow twittens of the Old Town, across the seafront and up to the hilltop ruins of Hastings Castle.
Here the 'Jack' is symbolically slain and the spirit of the Summer released in a ceremony enjoyed by thousands of people.
Mingling with this festival are thousands of motor cyclists who rendezvous along the seafront.
I've photographed this event for more years than I care to mention.
I decided to adopt a different approach to record the day by hiring a seafront garage with the intention of setting up a make shift photography studio.
