Popular Mechanics Magazine Redesign

Popular Mechanics is a magazine that inspires, instructs and influences readers to help them master the modern world. I chose to redesign this magazine as it is a magazine that holds a lot of information as opposed to visuals. With the decreasing attention span of humans, it's hard to keep readers submerged in the vast bodies of text. In an attempt to make Popular Mechanics an easier read, and engage a broader audience, I redesigned the masthead, cover and three spreads.

Masthead Exploration:
The topics discussed in Popular Mechanics are diverse, due to which everyone is bound to find an article they'd like to read in every issue. A more friendly, simple and universal masthead would attract a wider audience. I explored sans serif typefaces that match these attributes to develop these mastheads.

Comparison of original design and redesign
Cover Page:
Many of the stories covered by Popular Mechanics are very abstract, such as this month's issue about the Cloud. Using illustrations as graphic elements definitely helps the reader visualize and understand what they are reading about and also makes the process more interactive and engaging.
Spreads:
The pop of bold colors on a light pastel background that is easy on the eyes, maintains the readers attention. The typeface has no variation in line weight, which makes the text less chaotic and more legible.
