Nadia Murad is a young Yazidi woman who was captured by the IS in August 2014, and used as a sex slave and tortured. Her friends, family, and many members of her home community were killed. This book features amended interviews with Nadia where she charts both her physical and emotional locations throughout this time.

Type Treatment
To echo the delicacy and vulnerability of Nadia's Story, I chose to exaggerate the contrast between large and small type, as well as the choice of serif and sans serif typefaces.

Orientation
In section two ("During"), the orientation of the book changes to guide the viewer along the confusing journey Nadia had to take. The physical action of turning the book further brings the viewer into Nadia's story.

Materials + Depth
The materials used — a cream, delicate paper that is soft to the touch and cardboard for the packaging — again further ideas of vulnerability and emphasize Nadia's anonymity while kept captive under IS. To achieve complexity and depth within the book, I chose a paper that was somewhat transparent. When printing on both sides, type on the reverse side was lightly visible. Pages were then meant to be torn to reveal the reverse side.
