The film explores a journey to find the moments of beauty within a unique stylized universe. Through observing the surrounding lights, detailed atmospheric elements and landscapes, a new elegant world is revealed for the first time.

Beyond the Moment of Beauty: Into the Galaxy is a short film – the sequel to my first short “The Moment of Beauty”.

BEHIND THE SCENES

I started creating this short film in 2015, but stopped and restarted twice so there are 3 phases.
This video shows the progress from phase 1 to phase 3.

The result of research and study from Phase 1 and Phase 2, combined with inspiration from a trip to Europe, finally brought the visuals and story together and Phase 3 was born.

SHOOTING

Live action photography was done at Iino Minami Aoyama Studio in Tokyo with Iino Mediapro team and DP Tsutomu Fujimoto. The key element to get right was the “wind” control as it aided to bring the character into the scene more seamlessly.

These Animatics were created in early September. It is the beginning of Phase 3.

Some of the random sketches helped me develop some concrete ideas to improve the scenes.

THE PROCESS – PHASE 2: January – February, 2016

STYLE FRAMES

In this phase, I was trying to narrow down the story from phase 1, and use the inspirations gained from my trips to Europe.

ANIMATICS

This animatic is the final version of phase 2. I believe the visuals progressed and became detailed along with improvements in the story, however this wasn’t satisfying to me so I did not move onto live action phase.

STORYBOARD

In order to enhance the story, I started by creating storyboards to make the vision clearer.

INSPIRATIONS

I was lucky to have a chance to see these beautiful nature landscapes such as waterfalls, northern lights and sky. They gave me precious inspirations. To see more inspirations: Iceland Trip and Germany & Switzerland Trip

THE PROCESS – PHASE 1: July – August, 2015

STYLE FRAMES

These are the first style frames that I created for the short film. It was going well at the beginning but I realized this is not substantial enough for a sequel to The Moment of Beauty especially since this version of the story went in far too many directions.

R&D, MOTION TESTS

I started some R&D last summer. It was very important for me to get a vision of the new style for the universe in phase 3.
