SNOWSHOE WARMING HUT

VIEW TUBE - WARMING HUT
Grouse Mountain North Vancouver

The View Tube is nestled along a snowshoe route, about 8 minutes away from the gondola. The site is surrounded by large trees and characterized by a slope from the access point, down to a small lake.

The View Tube is about user experience. During the winter months the hut operates as a warming hut; a cozy den that vanishes in heavy snow. During the summer the View Tube opens up to increase capacity and allow users to experience the tranquility of the lake and forest.

The View Tube acts as a moderator between human and nature. During the winter, when the tube is “closed” it frames views of the lake and it’s “snow window” acts as a snowfall gauge. During the summer the building "opens" allowing the forest to puncture the envelope and invite users onto the roof on onto the extended, hinged, platforms

The exterior is made of charred cedar. The black façade of the View Tube contrasts against the polished plywood of the interior. A steel truss system suspends the structure off the ground, allowing access from the underside of the structure. Wood can also be stored there for wood burning stove.
