ABC Storyscapes

An immersive, multiplayer, multi-room, family entertainment experience designed for your smart home.

Blending the physical and digital world, Storyscapes allow your family to experience compelling, interactive stories that play out and come to life in various rooms and spaces across your house. Together you collaborate to complete a series of activities and physical challenges to unlock story elements that are part of a greater narrative.

Storyscapes use augmented reality, holograms and projections, combined with a range of natural user interfaces (e.g. gestures, voice control), 3D sound, smart objects, sensors, wearables and other personal devices.
Escape From Mars would use holographic simulations of scenarios and concepts that are difficult to comprehend or experience first-hand. Surviving on another planet is one example; you could visit the dark depths of the ocean, piece together a human heart, see how robots work, and more.

These kind of family experiences offer great levels of immersion and memorable engagement. You’d be using your voices, hands and bodies to manipulate tactile, virtual objects and spaces that seem as though they’re physically present in your house. You would interact with digital content in ways that are much more closely aligned to how you physically interact with the real world - and doing all of this together, as part of a big narrative challenge.
Each family member could choose to take on a different role - e.g. Commander, Engineer, Doctor, Resource Manager, Communications Officer. Tasks could include cultivating crops, collecting samples, monitoring oxygen and water, decoding data from rovers, fixing mechanical elements.

Escape from Mars would know how much each family member already knows about The Red Planet. It would also understand the kinds of challenges and activities that are best suited to each person’s skill level and interests. As a reward for completing challenges, family members could unlock other visualisations and artefacts that live on beyond the story.
Family members are physically placed within story scenes projected all around them. They can speak to and interact with characters, and walk around feeling as though they are really present in the drama. The people and artefacts seem very real. A huge folio of evidence needs to be pored over in great detail - photos, notes, objects, audio snippets, soundscapes, sensory clues.

Unwelcome is a perfect entertainment experience for families with older children. Families can play at their leisure, depending on where they’re up to in the series, or play for fun anytime. The format works as a compelling group appointment activity, but individual members could also carry out their own research and detective work between group plays. Who will be your family expert?
Race Around The World blends and reimagines popular forms of family entertainment (e.g. quiz and competition shows, co-operative games, “maker” challenges and treasure hunts) - all through a deeply engaging, virtual story adventure that plays out via your smart home. It’s the ultimate physical family challenge!

Imagine a mixed reality family experience that comes alive in various rooms across your home, and virtually places you in locations all over the world. You have to work together to solve puzzles and complete challenges involving local currencies, customs, history, languages and transport. You might need to quickly learn how to perform a national dance or sport - or, you could even find your fridge giving you tips for a virtual national cooking challenge! In and amongst all this, you also need to keep your eyes peeled for clues to a bigger story that needs to be solved.

In this storyscape, anyone can be an expert, despite age. It’s all about using your body to laugh and learn, and have a fun, memorable, shared experience.

Race Around The World could be a suite of themed experiences - where each edition explores a particular continent, or all of the activities take place in a particular historical period. Families could play in real time as part of a live event, with live data and content - or they could play in their own time and then aggregate their results to compare against other families.
This concept partly borrows from and reimagines various elements of ABC TV’s My Place, but also takes some inspiration from shows such as Geneaology Roadshow and Who Do You Think You Are? (but without the celebrity factor). The difference here is the combination of smart home technology and artificial reality to make a very personal, immersive experience.

The Life of Us is a storyscape that provides engaging virtual social experiences for families. Creating and shaping your family’s story is perfect activity for the whole family to take part in and build over time. You could experience alternate family histories based on what various family members and members of your clan think, know and believe. Or, imagine sharing your album with your cousin who lives overseas, and virtually travelling back in time together to visit your great grandparents in their first home in China before they came to Australia.

The Life of Us would work especially well for families with primary school age children, as it crosses over with various elements of the national curriculum.
