Google Cards Based IoT Scenarios at CMU

Project Overview
Carnegie Mellon University  |  Project Duration: 5 months and counting  |  Team Size: 8
This is an ongoing student project being mentored by Professor Jason Hong at Carnegie Mellon University. The brief was to visualize Internet of Things (IoT) scenarios that could be made possible at Carnegie Mellon University, using Google Cards as a medium,  when students share their WiFi location data with different circles of the CMU community such as their classmates, their department coordinator, faculty or the entire CMU community at large.

My Role
IoT Scenario Designer
Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

My Process
Conceptualization  |  Visualization  |  High-Fidelity PSD Mockups  |  Presentation
My process involved working with a team of fellow students at Carnegie Mellon University to achieve our common goal of gaining a better understanding of how our target users, in our case these were CMU students, perceived privacy. For this purpose, my role was to conceptualize and mockup Google Card scenarios that require the users to trust the system and share their data with it in order for the scenarios to be feasible. The development team would then select some of the scenarios to test in our target environment, which was the CMU campus. I mocked up these concepts using Adobe Photoshop.

What's next
My next task is to run a survey with a random sample of 500 CMU students to understand how comfortable students would be with sharing their location and activities, and how useful they find the proposed IoT scenarios if the privacy concerns could be addressed. The reasoning behind using 500 participants is to collect a minimum of 100 responses, assuming a successful survey completion rate of 20%.

Conclusion
This project made me think about the high level of trust that smart systems today require to function optimally. In order to earn the trust of the target users, it is crucial to store their data securely and use it responsibly.
