The Move! NYC Project was a short conceptual design project, started in 2007 and restarted in 2009, aimed at developing alternative mass transit mobility systems for the City of New York to replace the taxi cab service.
The original premise of the project was to develop an immediate repalcement of the taxi cab fleet, dislocating hundreds of thousands of drivers and vehicles from the already crowded throughfares of Manhattan. Considerations were given to include current yet underutilized propulsion technologies and vehicle mobility models that would sustain or improve transit on current taxi service infrastructure, improve local air quality and state of environmental health, and provide innovative design that inspired environmental awareness and mass transit participation.
The MOVE project is comprised of a vast fleet of self-powered, automated vehicles that utilize air engine propulsion that operated by the former taxi cab operators as roving transit francises to service the metropolitan area. The vehicle could be called upon by a prospective customer either by phone to the dispatch or by voice-activation in the field. The vehicle then locates its user by means of global satilletie GPS location and arrives to the pickup point within 5 minutes of the initial call. Customers can pay either by phone app, over-the-phone automated payment, or on-demand service panel (located on the vehicle's entry point) to input both destination point and payment type. The vehicle in operation then services main throughfares, allows the rider(s) to carpooling with other riders or the option to reserving the trip to a sole occupant (at a premium) in frequented routes of travel within the city. In the defaulted shared trip, along the fastest route to the requested destination, other riders that have called in for travel requests are picked up along the route and are able to share the trip, encouraging interpersonal communication among commuters. The vehicles would feature digital interfacing for advertising and entertainment along the travel, thus external and internal space can be commodisized for additional funds for the taxi operator, which would be relocated to a central operation center or district dispatch. The vehicles would operate commonly alongside major bus routes and recharge their air supply for their engines at stalls and spaces reserved within bus lanes at major traffic landmarks.
