This is a series of travel posters highlighting some favorite places I have visited around the world. Executed in a loose and playful style that references American and European posters of 1918—1930 and includes both digital and traditional media blended in various ways. I feel like I could work on this series forever.
Los Jardines del Alcázar (The Palace Gardens), in Seville, Spain. A magical place of fountains, palms, cedars, orange trees, free-range cats and white doves, cradled in gorgeous Moorish architecture. An earthly paradise. It is overlooked by La Giralda, the ornate bell tower (once a minaret) of the nearby Catedral de Santa María de la Sede (The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the See).
A tropical island off the coast of Belize, Ambergris Caye features beaches of cool, white sand, Caribbean turquoise water, and a slow, easy pace.
Pont Adolphe (Adolphe Bridge) spans a gorgeous wooded park near the center of the city of Luxembourg. It is a city that seems perfectly happy to be simultaneously ancient and modern. To be there is to experience a constant sensation of time travel.
The Cliffs of Moher are sea cliffs on the west coast of Ireland, in beautiful County Claire. Gannets, gulls and other seabirds loop and play over the crashing slate blue waves of the North Atlantic.
Sunsets over the Mojave Desert in southern California are absolutely spectacular. As the sky over the still desert fills and swirls with raging color, its massive, ringing silence gives way to the prelude of twittering birds and insects, ultimately relenting to the haunting calls of invisible coyotes far and near. Their howls splitting open the temporary darkness which quickly becomes a ghostly backdrop to the billions of brilliant and dazzling stars.
La Paz (The Peace), capitol city of Bolivia, is a beautiful city of contradictions and odd juxtapositions. Stunning, modern architecture rising next to the crumbling structures built from available materials. La Paz is populated with a varied collection of wonderful people both urban and rural, all of whom have a tremendous respect for the Earth and all that flows from her. Seemingly every one with a smile for an awkward American with no idea where he is, and struggling to find the Spanish word for something or another. This city runs at a slightly slower pace than many others.
Roatán is a tropical island paradise in the country of Honduras. Dense tropical rain forest full of hummingbirds banana trees, coconut palms, hibiscus flowers, and all manner of beautiful wild things is set right up against gorgeous beaches of white sand and crystal clear turquoise water. A little swim will bring you out to world-class snorkeling and SCUBA magnificence, which defies the meager description of words.
Puget Sound is a massive body of open water and the huge watershed of tributaries that feed it, located in northwest Washington State. It is beautiful, quiet and serene, often shrouded by clouds that can obscure the nearby mountains, allowing them to move in and out of view and creating an ever changing tide of the close and expansive.
Tiwanaku is a Pre-Columbian archaeological site near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. Inhabited as early as 1500 BC, it is ancient, and features the Temple Kalasasaya, depicted in the poster. It is a powerful site in the beautiful high plains of the Andes. Circling above, is the ever vigilant and graceful Andean Condor, among the largest flighted birds in the world.
Recoleta is a barrio in Buenos Aires, Argentina which features the Basilica de Nuestra Senora Del Pilar (Basilica of Our Lady of Pilar), erected in 1725, and the attached cemetery (Cementerio de la Recoleta) among Recoleta's many other attractions. These also include the famous Ombú trees. One tree in front of the Basilica (not illustrated in the poster) is around 220 years old, with a canopy covering 21,124 square feet. One tree. The beauty, history, and reverence of this place is impossible to capture.
