Overview

Oktoberfest first came about after the Royal Wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on the 12th October 1810. Many of the citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held in front of the city gates to celebrate the happy, Royal event. One of the festivities held to mark the occasion was horse racing. The popularity of the racing resulted in the event being repeated again the next year and thereafter gave rise to the annual tradition of Oktoberfest.

Even though the horse racing is no longer part of the festivities, the number of small beer stands grew rapidly, ultimately being replaced by beer tents and halls by landlords and breweries. The rest of the festival is enriched with traditional German Oompah bands and a stunning fun fair which entices some 6 million visitors from all over the world each year.
The main attraction however at Oktoberfest remains Germany’s “liquid gold”, with an estimated 6 million plus litres of beer being consumed this year.
