Elliptical, spiral, seamless stair using composites, curved glass, wood, LED's and steel
Conceived by designers at Callison in NYC and executed by Feature Factory / Feature Walters, this exceptionally clean-looking stair is entirely seamless over its 3.5 story inside and outside surfaces. Cast from only three re-useable molds and joined on site, the form was perfected in Solidworks and executed in both digitally-controlled and CNC-milled portions.
The structure which I designed consists of a pre-loaded spirally-shaped truss and was necessary to reduce weight in this 1908 riveted-steel building.
I am particularily proud of the fact that the entire stair was installed and completed without a single item on our punchlist.
