Scroll down to see the entries from the winner, Joel Gonzalez, and additional noteworthy compositions chosen by Create Magazine's content director, Terri Stone. “Because October is National Bullying Prevention Month in the United States,” Stone explains, “we asked challenge participants to create art that relates to the theme ‘different is beautiful.’ Some people represented the theme in their art, and others explained the connection in social media posts.”
The latter was true of Joel Gonzalez (@johwell), whose work was hand-picked by Swopes. “Growing up I was bullied for being gay,” he wrote. “It wasn't until I was older that I was able to understand that being different isn't a burden but a blessing. Finding my passion for creating images on my phone has helped me further embrace all the parts of who I am. This image here combines two parts of my life: the bottom half represents my life growing up in Chicago, where I learned many great lessons; the top half was taken just this week on my way to Paris, where I practice the lessons I have learned and spread love all over the world.”
