Travel Spending May Be Increasing Slower

As a civic administrator for the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, David Frasher serves his community as the City Manager. He has dedicated most of his life to public service and has managed numerous municipal institutions while guiding the success of city employee activities. When he is not serving the city, he spends his time traveling.

The World Travel and Tourism Council announced that global travel spending is expected to increase by 3.1 percent this year. However, this figure has marginally decreased from the 3.3 percent forecast since March 2016.

The slow growth can be attributed to unpredictable economies and the dangers of terrorism. Still, the group stressed that macroeconomic problems such as personal finances and local economic trouble are more likely to impact travel expenses. Even with the threat of terrorism, travelers simply modify their travel itineraries accordingly. For example, instead of traveling to France, they opt to go to Spain or Italy.

The council also released a forecast on global travel spending this year, with South Asia leading at 5.9 percent, followed by Northeast Asia at 4.7 percent and Southeast Asia at 4 percent. North America is expected to see growth of 3.1 percent, while Europe can expect to see only 2.2 percent growth in tourism. Latin America, however, appears to be the worst performer, with a decline of 0.9 percent.
