Active in many charities, Lisa M. Nousek has been a donor and sponsor of the annual Friends of Karen Gardnertown Polo Benefit for the last two years.

Friends of Karen began in 1978 when Sheila Patterson decided to raise money to help the family of 16-year-old Karen MacInnes pay the medical bills of their daughter who was terminally ill. Since those modest beginnings of one friend helping another, the organization has assisted 14,000 children and their families in coping with critical illnesses. Today Friends of Karen provides emotional and financial assistance as well as advocacy to help families better deal with the myriad challenges that must be faced, including those of a child whose brother or sister is seriously ill.

When a child has a life-threatening illness, everyone in the family is seriously affected. Friends of Karen provides sibling support by helping siblings understand their fears about an illness and guiding them through processes that reduce these fears. The organization also educates siblings about the specific illness their brother or sister might have, helping them to better understand what their brother or sister is going through. In addition, Friends of Karen uses specially designed tools to encourage communication between all family members to help them become stronger throughout the course of the illness.
