Proposal for Student and Medical Campuses in Monteverde, Costa Rica
SUMMER 2009
REUSECommunity Campus Proposal for The Friends School in Monteverde, Costa Rica
The Monteverde Friends School is a small private school educating kids from Kindergarten through 12th grade with an enrollment of roughly one hundred students.   In redefining how spaces are used, it is important to preserve the aspects of campus space that encourage a wide range of community members to interact with one another.  Classroom layouts, for instance, should allow a fifth grade student to help a second grade student, and reflect the integration rather than the compartmentalization of subjects.

Our proposal aims to meet as many of these needs as possible and in the most sustainable way possible as the campus continues to grow.  After careful site documentation and thorough analysis of the current use of campus space, we developed a comprehensive plan for the relocation of spaces during each phase of construction.
REUSING MATERIALS AND REDEFINING SPACEConstruction Phase Overview
1. Set up new KINDER classroom
2. Construct new MEETING ROOM
3. Relocation into new classroom space
4. Expand OFFICE

Step-by-step Outline of Construction Phases
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Set up new KINDER classroom in existingmultipurpose

- Close up wind tunnel by expanding new kinder
- Build new bathroom additions
- Move all tile to “wet” side of room with plumbing and install wood for dry side
- Double door entrance from courtyard used as primary entrance
- Double doors from hallway can now be closed off and wall space used
- Relocate Kinder class

Advantages:
- Enough storage space already built in
- Separate spaces for wet and dry activities
- Doors to playground allow separate circulationfor kids at different times when needed - doors also can be used as emergency exits
- Previously 62 square meters, now 74 m2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Construct new MEETING ROOM

- Deconstruct old kinder space, (save good wood for future use)
- Lift, rotate, and relocate existing shopbuilding to later connect with new building
- Build addition onto existing shop roof tocontrol rain - keeps the water away from point of connection between the two buildings and drains it to outer edges
- Build new meeting room and vestibule
- Vestibule connects meeting room building with 2-story central building on site
- Living roof with small plant garden on both vestibule and meeting room roofs

Advantages:
- Rotating existing shop allows enough space fornew meeting room to be built without tearing anything down
- Allows enough space for meeting hall to extend into existing shop building for kitchenette or other extra-use space
- Kitchen from old multipurpose is now not needed there, and can be relocated to new kitchenette for meeting room
- Meeting room building’s ceiling is taller than vestibule, allowing light to come into clerestory windows
- Living roof controls noise from rain and flooding or damage to foundation
- Previous meeting room was 93 m2 alone, and 156m2 when used with the multipurpose (the previous multipurpose being 63 m2)
- The new meeting room alone, not including kitchenette, totals 166 m2, which is larger than the previous combined 156 m2
- The kitchenette adds 30 m2 to the 166, which makes a total of 196 m2
- This building is provided with enough storage space from existing shop building (adjacent to new kitchenette) that the space can be used as both a new meeting hall and multipurpose space
- New stage is roughly 40 m2

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Relocation

- Build partition in old meeting room for two newclassroom spaces (using good wood from kinder deconstruction?)
- In order to set up guard’s apartment in 1st/2nd grade space, relocate 1 st/2nd grade into classroom on left inside old meeting room
- Simultaneously, floor can be leveled off in new classroomon right of partition (to stage level)
- Relocate Spanish primary into classroom on rightonce floor is finished
- Relocate computer lab to old special needs onceguard is settled
- Spaces in library can be reused for new specialneeds area, temporarily or permanently

Advantages:
- Security guard now has private space that is 38m2
- New location for computer lab is secure being adjacent to guard
- 1 st/2 nd grade, primary Spanish and computer lab still use roughly same squared meters
- No need for 2-story building for classroom space when existing space is being reused
- Relocating primary Spanish allows for office to be extended in the final phase

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. Expand OFFICE

- Take down wall on 2nd floor between old computer lab and old office space for new classroom space
- Take down wall on 1 st floor between office and old primary Spanish space to extend office

  Advantages:
- New office is now 55 m2, compared to the split office space before, which was 18 m2, and 20 m2
- 2 nd floor in central building is now used for all classroom space
