Calligraphy on ZAZ Zaporozhets 966

Surface Design
This project is made for Russian clothing brand Zaporozhets Heritage (link).

The main idea behind this project was making a unique combination of two different periods of Russian history. I took traditional Russian letters and wrote them on Soviet car ZAZ Zaporozhets Model 966. The project was really hard to finish, because it's incredibly difficult to combine two drastically different cultures, without going into kitsch and grotesque
.

So let's get started.
This is my mood board and reference page. I'm inspired by the variations of letters from the book of Karion Istomin "Big Alphabet book".
These are two main styles I've used in this project. On the left side letters are made with flat brush, on the right side is lettering done with a pen.
These are the instruments I've used. The whole car was created using Molotow™ acrylic paint. Lettering and ornaments were created with Molotow™ markers. My favorite flat brush for calligraphy is Da Vinci™ 1374 NOVA one stroke.
The starting point is painting the car with black paint. At this moment I've used matte black paint, as I have thought that golden elements would better stand-out.
One of the most hard moments I've experienced during this project. Before writing this style of Vyaz, I usually create a grid, just to make sure that all letters will be perfectly arranged. As I'm a left-handed, this process is time consuming, because I have to wait while the paint dries off.
As I'm finished with lettering, the real fun begins- it's time for calligraphy. While I'm using brush, I feel freedom of stokes and that's more relaxing than lettering.
A short video from my Instagram (link), showing the process - the sixth day of work. At that moment I though that I would finish the whole car in two days - I have never been so wrong in my whole life! :)

The whole project took about 14 days of hard labour. I've planed to cover the car with matte varnish, but I had doubts. Gloss varnish looked so much better and the final stroke was done using Molotow™ 421 Gloss Varnish. The final result is below.
Thank you for watching. Hope you like this project!
