Dominik Mayer is a German Illustrator focused on dark fantasy art. Vibrant colors, dynamic compositions, and the clever use of basic geometric shapes make his art striking and unique.
Dominik works for clients worldwide, among them Wizards of the Coast, Axis Animation, Netflix, Blizzard, Tencent, and Riot Games. Besides his work as an industry professional, he also works as an independent artist on his own projects which can be followed on his social media channels. Down below I've included some of his works.
I was commissioned to create visuals for his personal brand (logo) and his own intellectual property "Nachthunger" (logo, font, symbols).
Dominik's art aesthetics have a beautiful strict geometric core. His illustrations are mostly tied to medieval themes that include knights, swords, mythical beings and related themes, therefore I took the path of creating blackletter-based font and branding for both parts of my commission.
The main focus for his personal branding is that the logotype will be used on his main website and all across his merchandise, so apart from creating lettering logo I had to create also small monogram that contains two letters: D and M.
The base of his typographic logotype is calligraphic but it has some intended ductus (the direction, number and sequence of strokes necessary to create letterforms) inconsistencies, so much so they form a proper non-strict, non-sharp, but still solid aftertaste.
There were two main focuses that I had to avoid during this development:
1) avoid any negative cultural connotations of standart blackletter letters,

2) make at the same time classic, but modern blackletter aesthetics.
During the logo development process we've decided to take one step further and create a custom font that is based on the lettering formula of his new logo. The "Dominik" font development took approximately three months and final product was a standart Latin font with three styles (normal, medium, bold) and vast amount of decorated initials.
Font Dominik is legible and neutral enough to be used as text font, however it's been used more as a display font for titles and subtitles, not for body text. This font looks great when combined with Dominik's illustrations and exceptionally well fits in when used "Difference" blend mode. Down below I'm providing several use cases.
Nachthunger is a community-driven game project, where patreon supporters choose how the narrative unveils. The story is a close relative to standard medieval legends, where a lone knight travels through the mystic land and faces different tasks, confronts creatures, friendly and not so clans and enemies. How the story unveils is up to patreons and his Discord supporters.
Apart from lettering, I designed symbols for different clans: The Circadian Cult, The Fairies and the Rhombus knights. These are the clans that lone swordsman encounters most.
