Jules Verne - Minimal Book Covers

Concept

This series was created as a submission for "Rediscovering the Classics" - a campaign for "illustrators, typographers, and designers of all stripes to create new covers starting with 100 of the greatest works of fiction in the public domain". I loved reading Jules Verne's scientific adventure novels growing up, and decided to design covers for three of his classics - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Around the World in 80 Days.

Solution

Each book is about an adventure to a different portion of the earth (the center, the ocean, and the around the circumference). I decided to create a sphere to represent the earth and gradients to represent each journey. The title font was created from Baskerville, a serif font, to reference that it is science fiction of a time past. The spine of each book was created with a color from the cover of their respective journey.
