CycleScape is located in Hagley Park and is placed as a link to and fromthe central city. The design focus is to create a structure that brings back astrong community tie to the central city while introducing a bicycle hire andparking scheme.

“Christchurch is a relatively compact city with a dry climate and flattopography, where more daily journeys to, from and within the Central City couldeasily be undertaken by cycle.”
(Central city plan, Christchurch City council, December 2011)

CycleScape is placed in the Event Zone of Hagley Park. It is a temporarystructure as it is constructed with adaptable components that are able todismantled, reconfigured and relocated to other locations around the Central city and beyond.

The kit –set structure is created through adaptable modules ofsustainably resourced CNC plywood that is assembled thorough a click-raftprocess developed by CMA + U architects. The minimal, lightweight, adaptableand modular construction provides a new, different and convincing solution of amethod of construction for the Christchurch rebuild. The construction processprovides zero waste as the modules can be repurposed and reused to have a continual future.

The ground floor is a community bicycle store and has a small cafe. The top floor provides space for bicycle hire and parking and acts as a viewing deck to watch over the activities surrounding Hagley Park. The introduction of CycleScape creates a catalyst to change how people might travel around the city,in which positively transform the living and working experiences of the Christchurch inhabitants. The bicycle hire and parking establishes a sustainable and attractive alternative to vehicle traffic whether for work or leisure.
