RUN // THE DIVIDED DECADE

I had to come up with a section of the design elements for an exhibition held at the Powerhouse Museum. This exhibit was a focus on Sixties design throughout the decade, and then comparing these styles to their influences on contemporary design. I was asked to design the brand, book, posters, banners, tickets, postcards and wall decals. This was probably the most daunting and challenging of all my projects, as I had never been asked to make this much work on my own. I spent a good amount of time reading and researching Sixties’ design with a lean towards Pop Art.

In order to bring this juxtaposition of early Sixties’ design and contemporary design, I used elements inspired by Saul Bass. These elements included some of the base colours he used repeatedly in his work as well as the shapes he often created. Bass’ work was iconic in the Sixties and remains a legend in both the fine arts and design industry.

I want to return to these eventually and refine the ideas such as the typography, which I found to be a little unclear and not as relevant to the juxtaposition I mentioned before. From there, I find the placement of design elements and shapes to be a bit rough.
To honour and show respect to Saul Bass,

I will be returning to this project.
