On July 12, Dan Mumford kicked off a series of Make It on Mobile challenges, which we will be posting through the end of 2016. He designed a tutorial on how to use Adobe Illustrator Draw to make screen print-style illustrations. We invited people to follow along and submit their own creations, with the hashtag #MakeItonMobileContest, and received many outstanding entries. Scroll down to see Alistair Baxter's winning piece (chosen by Dan Mumford) and several noteworthy pieces chosen by Create Magazine's managing editor, Charles Purdy.
"We saw so much amazing artwork, it was hard to select just a handful," says Charles. "These 'editor's picks' show the submissions' great range of styles and subject matter."
When creating his bold digital illustrations, Mumford refers back to his background in screen printing. And thanks to the unique way he applies color to his work, those images often have a psychedelic, screen-printed feel—as does this piece, which he created solely with Adobe Illustrator Draw on an iPad Pro while traveling in Europe.
Mumford calls Draw the “missing step” in his workflow—not only because it gives him the power to create and revise work anywhere, but also because it allows him to explore new ideas faster. “I’m not someone who sketches much in a sketchbook,” he says. “In the past, I would ponder an idea, then put it aside, and then come back to it later. With Draw, I can work up ideas very quickly…. And using Draw is not that different from how I normally work in Photoshop—I’m using the app to create my work in a way that I’m already quite comfortable with, but now I can also do it when I’m on the move. I’m not going anywhere without it.”
Congratulations to Alistair Baxter for his winning piece! See below for Editor's picks and keep an eye out for the next Make It on Mobile challenge. See the Create Magazine landing page for more information.
Stay tuned for our next contest in a few weeks, where you'll learn another artist's process and have the chance to enter your work. Share your creation with us via social media and use the hashtag #MakeItonMobileContest: you may win a prize!
