This project will explore the use of digital methods for understanding and mapping (secure) messaging apps and their support ecologies. The main objective is to understand a particular genre of apps, i.e. secure or encrypted messaging apps, and develop novel methods for studying the ecologies around them.
Method: build secure app lists using AppAnnie (keyword ranking), using the queries:
"secure", "security", "encrypted", "encryption", "privacy", "private", "anonymous", "self-destructing"
+ "messaging", "messenger", "chat", "talk", "text" (40 in total)
"secure", "security", "encrypted", "encryption", "privacy", "private", "anonymous", "self-destructing"
+ "messaging", "messenger", "chat", "talk", "text" (40 in total)
----
distribution of apps according to their self description in the app store: do they describe themselves as more secure or more easy to use? Which are the most frequent keywords in their description?
