Black Ops II Concept Wallpaper

Black Ops II Concept Wallpaper
Entered into a Youtube contest hosted by Evan Eckard

Having much respect for designer, Evan Eckard, I was intrigued to hear that he had posted a contest on youtube. The contest called for a completely original take on the upcoming Call of Duty title, Black Ops II. Immediately, I honed in on what I love most: simplicity and type. I went to the drawing board, made several sketches and took a ton of notes. I focused on the art directions the previous Call of Dutys had used and decided to try something new. Obviously, wave forms from the MW2 and MW3 promotion campaigns were tossed out and overly grunge textures were not an option due to the original Call of Duty logos. I made a quick attempt at a line drawing but I decided to make this my own and not copy Evan Eckard's style. In total, this design took me about 5 hours. I spent a lot of time conceptualizing and tried several different variations before settling on a final. One of the best parts on working on this design was to accentuate a question: "What is Black Ops 2?" To me Black Ops 2 is innovative and bold. As such, I wanted a design that was apparent and in your face. Being an avid gamer, I know that Black Ops 2 is a huge risk for the CoD series. Aware of the possible competition for this contest, I consider my design a risky one. The work exhibited below will take you through my process.

This was the first step in creating the "II" in the Black Ops II logo. I created one rectangular shape and then etched out the sides with the pen tool, eventually copying it to the other side.
I consider this to be step 2 of the design process. I went with an orange color scheme to obviously link my design to the original logo. I added a grunge texture in the back to give it that "war-torn" feel and proceeded to fade out the sides of the canvas. All this was done to give the "II" a very prominent look.
This is the initial variation I decided to do. My first idea was to have a "gunshot" entering and exiting the "II". Although I received some decent feedback on the design, I did not care for it. The design seemed to be incomplete. Running out of time and not knowing where to go with it, I decided to move on to variation 2.
Variation 2. I went back to the dominant look and immediately liked this design over the other. I added some line forms on the side to accentuate the piece and added a small gloss effect to the top half of the "II". Keeping in mind that this is designed as a wallpaper, I wanted to leave the sides as uncluttered as possible, to ensure that this background would not clash with desktop icons.
Final rendition of Variation 2. This is the final design I chose. Obviously there are more effects in this piece. Sunbursts were added in the background and more lines added to the sides.
Not overdone, but just enough to draw attention, I am pleased with the final result and look forward to seeing other entries for this contest. In close, I would like to thank Evan for this opportunity as he has really reached out to many young designers across the internet.
