Cantilever Chess Table
Furniture Design and Custruction
This is a Cantilever Chess Table that I designed and built for my senior project in High School in 2009.

The table was designed using AutoDesk Inventor, and is built entirely using traditional joinery techniques, no screws or nails were used. The drawer and table body were constructed out of Hard Rock Maple, using half-blind dovetail joints. The legs, drawer front, and trim were constructed from American Black Walnut. The playing surface is inlaid with Walnut burl and highly figured Maple squares. The drawer front was made by book-matching the waste wood from cutting the curved walnut legs. Not visible in the pictures is a small routed inset on the bottom of the drawer front, this allowed me to not use any hardware, and really showcase the natural beauty of the hardwoods. The body of the piece was finished in a natural semi-gloss shellac finish, the playing surface was finished in a high-gloss poly. I felt these finishes best brought out the figure and beauty of the hardwoods.
