Architecture at night

It's not about the camera
I often photograph exterior architecture at night. I do this to show that a building is not just a facade. When I craft these photographs I start before the sun goes down to capture the sky and other details then start the process of taking many different shots late into the evening. I usually have my assistants turn on and off the various lights I want to isolate and photograph them all separately. We also set up as many as 150 of our own lights inside and out and use several thousand feet of extension cords to put light where I want it to show texture, dimension, color and to separate space. By the time we have finished capturing all of the information I want we start picking up our equipment. It has usually been 6 to 12 hours by the time we are finished on site for a single photograph. Later, after the complete job is done I will then create the final image by layering and masking the information in photoshop to complete my vision. It really isn't much different than when I shot film. I just don't have to use all of those color correction filters I used to need and I have many more options. I also don't loose sleep waiting for transparencies to be developed.
