Robert S. Vance Federal Building and Courthouse

Architecture Photography
The Vance Federal Courthouse though much the same on the outside has been completely remodeled on the inside. Quinn Evans Architects who specializes in historic renovations did a wonderful job on this beautiful landmark. If you wish to license the use of any of these photos please contact Sherwood Cox at sc@sherwoodcox.com.
The main level windows were replaced with cast aluminum duplicates fitted with blast resistant glass.
The basement and first two floors were completed in 1921 while the third and fourth floors were added later.
The focus was on restoring the main lobby as public access to the three US Bankruptcy Courtrooms. Each courtroom has its own waiting area. John Whitaker, the lead architect on the job said they were able to re-create the original arched windows in walnut and bronze from historic drawings. A lot of natural light permeates the main lobby through the recreated arched windows.
Much of the original metel work and stone was preserved including the old elevator doors.
The security station is located at the west entrance.
Teller windows on the west side of the building look into the main lobby.
The courtrooms are lit well both by the skylight as well as by the full spectrum lighting installed in the courtrooms. Mechanical shades are installed to control the afternoon light if it becomes to bright.
The historic 3rd floor courtroom got a new ceiling with properly diffused air registers.
The judges walk way offers protection but lets in plenty of light.
Even the back of the building has a clean look.
The prisoner unloading has it's own entrance with an elevator to the holding cells.
Though unoccupied at the time of this production there is plenty of office space for federal and other agencies on all floors.
The Georgia White marble exterior was cleaned and repointed restoring the original splender of the building.
Much planning and cooperation went into this 5 day production. Meeting with the lead architect and learning what his vision is and how to show that was paramount. The cooperation of the management of this facility along with still working contractors also helped make creating this vision a reality. Thanks to all involved including my four assistants who without I could not have created these compelling photos.
