Spine of Society
Part One of a bookworks project
‘Spines of Society’seeks to highlight for role of books in the formation of societies, and how ascommunicators and containers of ideas, they have affected the world. Bothpassive and active, books simultaneously record and broadcast change andrevolutionary ideas- as well as other cultural phenomena such as poetry, art orpopular literature. By literally inserting into public building work, examplesof widely accessible material that is relevant and understandable for a wide audience, the idea of respect in heritage and for format is brought to life.

Located around multiple sites within a given townor city, each sculpture has the capacity to be tailored in book content to suitthe immediate vicinity (ie. The history of its immediate or larger location) orto the more general culturally significant texts (ranging from heavierphilosophical or scientific works to lighter art or poetry). Where viable, theycan be inserted into structures of significance or popularity to form permanentpieces of artwork. Leaving a tiny portion of the spines intact from the face ofthe concrete will stimulate curiosity toward the textural and physicalproperties and appearance of the books. Alternatively they could be embedded inthe ground to emphasise the bedrock role of books in their enduring physicalpresence in the world.
