Loggia dei Rucellai

Loggia dei Rucellai
In the historical city center of Florence one place draws attention and that is a loggia. In the past, the loggia was an extremely important place for wealthy Florentine families - it mostly served as part of their residential buildings or was located very close to them.
The concept developed from analyzing places with a high circulation of people, such as stations. The idea is to connect the loggia with the piazza in front of it and create a kind of a meeting point or an “urban stop”. Statue bases are inspired by characteristic loggia elements (arches, squares) and their design is a result of the arches top part being modified and multiplied.
One statue is of significant importance for the space and its base is designed as a connection between the shape of the loggia arches and the shape of the island of Cyprus. This is to create a base that mimics the abstract geometry of the island. The base columns are inspired by Greek columns and shown in an abstract way in steel profiles. The main materials of the interior are polished red steel, glass and typical Florentine stone.
The loggia should become an “urban stop” - a connection between ancient and Renaissance periods in Florence.
