Tectonic Construction

Program | This project was an exploration into the tectonics of architecture and construction. The design process started with a series of diagrams based off of an initial, abstract image. These diagrams were used to define a logic of shape and ruling geometry that was translated to a series of models that emphasised form through line and plane. The final construction had to be made of a thoughtfully designed system of modules, and had to fit a chosen site at the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) sculpture park. In my initial diagrams, as well as my site, I had the repeated theme of a three pointed intersection. I used that gesture as the basis of my construction. The form is six-pointed with high, open points over the three sections of path, in addition, opposite of each high point is a low, rest point.
Techniques Used | Ideation sketching; ideation modeling in basswood, string, steel wire, + bristol paper; final modeling in basswood and cotton string; digital represention through model photos, site photos, and additional media, composed in Adobe Photoshop.
