hortus conclusus | a photo reportage of a hermitage

In this enclosed place, where the german artist Gerhard Seyde turned away from this world, we learn remarkable things about his character, his ideas, his imagery, his struggles, his egomania, hopes and despair. Like the visit to a house of a casual acquaintance, one wants to get to know better, sweeping the view over bookshelves, tabletops, chairs and bed to create a new, elaborate image of the man who left behind all this. As a hermit he brooded, ate, worked, slept and drank in his cocoon to created his paradise and his hell.

The following photographs record the place, where Gerhard Seyde found the source of his art. His home, a blueprint of his life. His home, an echo of his heart and soul, an echo of his pictures and his sculptures. He lived in a vacuum, little contact with the outside world. Hidden lamps behind cardboard or paper, creating ominous shadows in the depths of space; a look behind countless mirrors opens the gates to a new worlds.

This project was printed in a 16 pages tabloid-sized newspaper and exhibited in the rooms of the LABOR, Cologne.
