The Laundry Springs in Laugardalur (Hot Springs Valley) were used by housewives and housekeepers in Reykjavík since the towns formation, and until 1976. Carrying the laundry from their homes to the hot springs was the best way to scrub off the dirt since the houses had not yet been connected to a water supply system. The women worked at the springs for hours in the burning steam and freezing cold wind. Today, washing and drying are energy intensive and take about 20% of the electricity at an average home. Þerrir is inspired by the old method of drying laundry in the open air.
