LUMODISK : Bicycle Lighting System

Entry for Braunprize 2012

LUMODISK is a bicycle lighting system designed to emphasize the three safety elements of night urban cycling; lighting, sighting and signaling.

LUMODISK seeks to reshape cycling attitude by making the bicycle respond to the cyclist in a way that reinforces the social responsibility for the safety of oneself and for the others in an increasingly populated urban city.

The device system works in pairs, with each pair of lighting disks as receivers, connecting via wireless technology to a pair of transmitting remote hand control for safety signaling to other road users, especially in the dark. An eco-friendly and energy efficient design, LUMODISK is powered through kinetic energy generated by magnetized dynamo sensors integrated to the light disks, which synchronize to revolution of the metallic wheel spokes. The Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) then illuminates the forward path as well as the reflective wheel rims of the bicycle during cycling, therefore enhancing night visibility for the cyclists and other road users simultaneously.
With form and function as the essentials, the design also expresses itself in a business-oriented approach of mass marketability and manufacturing process, where the lighting system could be readily acquired and self installed by mounting the light disks onto both ends of the front wheel axle.
