Layers of Sylvia Plath

Layers of Sylvia Plath
An homage to the life of a major poet.

"Without the Sylvia of Aurelia, the Sylvia at Smith, the Sylvia with Ted.
All that was gone, she didn't want any of it anymore. She wanted to be herself."
- Clarissa Roche, friend

As a confessional poet, Sylvia Plath express in her poems a strong desire for self-discovery, especially her role as a woman
and a poet.
In this book collection, we discover as each layer of her self was stripped away,
she discovers her voice as a poet. A collection of her poems are collected and bound each as a tiny handmade book.

The collection of books are neatly packaged in a clear acrylic box with bronze corners and latch.
The five biography books are tied together by tissue paper. As the reader unwinds the tissue, he reveals the title of the book layer by layer.
Correction tape and hand-drawn notations are added to the printed text to emulate the way Sylvia
often made ammendments to her poem's drafts.
Selected quotes are pulled out onto an extra flap of paper.
To showcase the multiple drafts Sylvia creates while writing poems, they are layered onto each other on the same page
so the reader can flip through and compare them easily.
The fifth book is white and completely empty, suggesting what might have been had Sylvia's life not ended as soon as it did.
A total of nine selected poems are made into indivial leather-bound books, each with a different size and tie.
The books are sewed by hand, creating a beautiful spine.
The title of the poems are tooled into the leather cover.
The poems are typed onto distressed paper on a typewriter, replicating Sylvia's drafts of her poems.
Thank you.
