On March 1, 2016, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced an agreement intended to bring ¥2 trillion in Japanese investments into the Egyptian economy. This cooperation comes five years after a major upheaval in the Egyptian political system and at a time when Egypt is still working to rebuild its economy and its tourism industry.

The agreement will feature investment in Egyptian infrastructure, including energy delivery systems, as well as an education partnership that will bring 2,500 students from Egypt to Japan by 2021. President al-Sisi cites this portion of the agreement as a key element of Egypt's ability to contribute to the relationship between countries. Investments will combine with more than US $500 million in loans from the Japanese government, which will fund such projects as the construction of a new solar power plant and the building of a passenger terminal at Borg El-Arab Airport in Alexandria.
