NRK Nyheter

Project Description
NRK Nyheter (NRK News) launched its new visual identity in June 2015.
Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) is Norway's license funded and non-commercial public service broadcaster.

The main motivation for making a new identity was to consolidate the brand across all platforms where NRK Nyheter delivers content.

As a public service broadcaster NRK Nyheter needs to be dependable, significant and updated, both in content and presentation.
It is essential that this content engages through storytelling and presentation at all touch points. To address this was our main task.

The new identity was developed in-house, in close co-operation with the TV- and online department.
Design concept
NRK Nyheter´s brand values are expressed as “First – Telling the Complete Story”. In the design process this was concretized as “The events of the world fall into place giving a complete image of the news”. The key concept of “putting into place” was visualized through the use of layering, division and offsetting, while the whole circle represented the complete image.

We sought to avoid traditional and familiar representations of the news through globes and maps, and look for less obvious ways to communicate news. We wanted to visualize the constant stream of events shaping the world we live in. NRK Nyheter´s role is to make sense of it, showing and explaining the bigger picture.

NRK wished to bring proximity and reality into their identity by using video footage and photography in the title sequences. We worked with the Norwegian electronica duo Röyksopp for the identity´s music and audio design, to introduce a contemporary and vibrant soundscape. Furthermore, we wanted to engage with the audience through the use of information graphics in storytelling. A supporting framework for this was developed.
Scope
Altogether, title sequences and studio graphics for 7 TV shows were produced, along with lower-third graphics and fullscreen graphics for all news shows, and implemented on several different systems (VizRT, ChyronHego, HTML5, Adobe).
A new news-front page for the web was introduced (nrk.no/nyheter), with further online projects and upgrades on the way.
A new common framework for the production of information graphics for TV and online was developed, and is constantly being expanded and adjusted.

The whole design profile is geared towards a high degree of flexibility to facilitate further development, and to meet new technical and journalistic demands and challenges in the coming years
