New York Fat Cap Chair - icon of expression -
Do you remember the early 80’s when hip hop and graffiti was shown on TV for the first time? Something amazing was happening in New York, and this expression of art and music spread from New York to every corner of the world. It changed my life and the lives of many other kids worldwide. The New York Fat Cap was an important tool for graffiti artists to express themselves. And now, a few decades later, it still is. By enlarging the New York Fat Cap to the right size and in the right proportions, I designed the New York Fat Cap Chair as an ode to this artistic freedom. Nowadays spray-can art is an accepted and well-respected art form which is shown in many galleries.
I began experimenting with typographic design and graffiti as a teenager. I designed the chair from my vision that beauty is to be found in small things – in this case in the cap of a spray can. This is how the idea for this project came about in 2006. The simple yet interesting form of the cap inspired me to make two original designs. The first hand-shaped prototypes were ready in 2007 and I showed it to the public at my first solo exhibition in Amsterdam in 2008. In a few years time I produced a dozen chairs by hand. After several years of receiving many requests, I thought in 2015 it was time to redesign the New York Fat Cap Chair.
The New York Fat Cap Chair is produced in Holland with the highest quality materials. The white top of the chair, with its beautiful shape and curves is rotation-molded polyethylene and is 100% recyclable . Not only the design but also the matte white finish will make it an eye-catcher in every interior. The injection-molded ABS black nozzle has the letters NY1 embossed on the surface as an ode to its origin. The metal-spun top part of the base is painted white. First a layer of base coating is applied and it is finished with a double layer of water-based white paint. The metal-spun bottom base gives the chair its final touch. A double clear coating protects the base from scratches and suggests that the New York Fat Cap Chair is on top of a spray can. Its height makes for a perfect sitting position. I tried to stay true to this icon of expression for everybody to enjoy – in your home, studio or other places. A high-quality product that is built to last!
This icon of expression with its beautiful curves and straight-ribbed pattern has an active and comfortable sit. With the perfect seating height of 18.5 inch/47 cm it is an object with character, beautiful to see and an eye-catcher in every interior.
