For this project I have been asked to explore, and make something within a context of modern and contemporary sculptural practice. I want to create a piece that involves the public so people can get involved.
During my research for this project it was this piece that stood out to me most. I really liked the different loops and turns in the piece, and I wanted to take my work in this direction. But I was't sure where I would begin, and what materials to use. So This is when I began to look at artist's who worked with wire. I thought wire would be a good material because it is fairl cheap and simple. With wire you can create interesting shapes and shadows. I just wasn't sure where to begin with working with the wire, where to get my ideas for the shapes from? How to involve the public and make it more of a fun playful piece.
I wanted to start looking at ways that I could create shapes to use as source to create my wire piece, so I started by simply making marks and seeing what I came up with. I then also made my own drawing machine and rolled beads, rice and other materials in ink to see what sort of marks i came up with.
I also have experimented looking at using texture to create different marks, by putting my paper over stuff and going over it with graphite. I didn't find this very successful however.
However I then discovered some artist's online that painted to music, the shapes and lines that they create I found were very interesting. They were loopy and very abstract, which is the kind of route I wanted to go down.
My idea is to involve the public, by making others paint to a selected piece of music. I think it would be interesting to see the different ways that people portray the same piece of music. I am going to look at different emotional soundtracks to experiment myself first with surfaces, size of surface. Working with different materials such as water paints, acrylics, pens, charcoal etc. I want to see what makes for more interesting viewing, and still keeping the materials of low cost to stick with the theme of Arte Povera.
After experimenting with various different sound tracks such as John Lennon, Imagine. James Brown Aint it funky now. Dunae Eddie, Movin' Grovin'. I decided to pick The Who Sparks to use for my final piece and work with other people to create the piece. I choose this piece because I really liked the outcome I came up with myself with it.
I gave people a simple piece of paper, pens and oil pastels and asked them to shut there eyes for less than 4 minutes and draw what they felt whilst I put The Who - Sparks on.
These are works that I selected out of the pieces I had other people do.
After gathering source material for my sculpture this is when I used details from all of these pieces to create an interesting wire sculpture. This is the piece that I came up with.
For the final piece I wanted to display the drawings with the sculpture.
