Competition
During my research, I found very few toys that are marketed towards kids that float as well. This seems to be exclusive to more expensive and elaborate ship models.
Insperation & Ideation
Yes... I am a one piece fan.
Personally, the show really gets me excited for adventure every week, the whole idea behind the toy I would be designing. Creating adventure each time you take it out!
Rough side profiles for the ship
In addition to a cute headstock, I had to develop a jolly roger that would not scare off kids. A traditional skull and crossbones were the basis for the design, but were massivley altered to make it child friendly.
Mechanisms
This mechanism is largely taken from the "Da Vinci Paddle Boat." It fits the theme of being human powered, due to the fact that it has to be wound to function.
The rudder is fully controlled by the steering wheel, due to two pulley systems. Because they interact with each other, they change the axis of movement from y to x.
Simplicity can often be very effective. In this case, the user simply pulls on a circular handle; in doing so, a spring compresses, and when let go it shoots back to its natural position. It stops because the system runs on a track, but the momentum is carried through the cannonball.
Materials & Processes (in production)
This is a study of what types of materials the ship could be made of in mass production. Some materials were chosen because of cost, or chosen because it's ability to not corrode. Also, the chart notes what types of processing each material must go through to achieve the desired shape.
Color Study
Hey! I couldn't decide! There were many colors tested out during the color study phase. During this particular phase, I asked peers what color combinations were strongest.
After some elimnation, it was time to ask kids. I took this image to multiple children to take a poll of which color scheme was best. It turned out that the bottom left, and top right were the favorites. Because I personally dislike using too many neutral colors, the bottom left color scheme was chosen for the final prototype.
Final Model
A rendering of one of the four color schemes. Here I tested the color of the sail itself with the logo.

The final model! Though it doesn't actually float, it has three fully functioning mechanisms.
The blue is a combination between House of Kolor base White and Blue Neon. The black is House of Kolor base black. Any other color that wasn't mentioned is Tamiya model paint. Finally the green leaf design and the eyeball/eyebrow are all made of vinyls.
