Rao Chalasani has worked for financial giants such as J P Morgan Chase, Merrill Lynch, and Deutsche Bank managing and working on the technology side of finance. Notably, between 2009 and 2010 Rao Chalasani was Merrill Lynch’s Chief Technology Officer and Risk Strategist, developing a new firm wide risk management platform. Beyond his professional life, Rao Chalasani has supported numerous charitable organizations. One such organization is the Sankara Foundation.

The Sankara Foundation is the America-based fundraising arm of the Sankara nonprofit in India, a nonprofit that runs eight eye care hospitals in India. The goal of the Sankara foundation is to eradicate curable blindness in India by 2020. The foundation seeks to achieve this by using the donations it receives to provide free eye care to people who are poor in rural India. The Sankara Foundation received a Charity Navigator 4-star rating in 2015, the third consecutive year it has attained the highest rating.

There are forty-five million people in India who are blind, and an estimated 80% of that population suffers from curable forms of blindness. So far the Sankara Foundation has treated over 1.3 million people. The hospitals funded by the Sankara Foundation offer treatments and diagnoses for a range of conditions ranging from cataract surgeries to eye cancers.
