The Doctors Without Borders. recently highlighted the work of one of its physicians in Hong Kong amid the coronavirus health crisis. Leaving Seattle as part of a coordinated effort to combat the disease during the early weeks of the COVID-19 spread, the doctor was reminded of the stigmatizing effect that the SARS outbreak had in Hong Kong more than a decade ago. Particularly impacted were the most vulnerable, with significant foreign domestic workers no longer able to travel to employers’ homes, for fear that they would impact the families' health.

Past experiences with new diseases signify that Hong Kong now has strict infection-control measures in place, with janitors constantly cleaning public spaces, from metro stations to elevators. At the same time, a hand-sanitizing gel is automatically offered when new customers enter establishments such as restaurants.

While it is normal that people worry when a new disease emerges, the Doctors Without Borders volunteer described one of the most important factors in preventing its spread by avoiding panicking and working together to minimize exposure risks. This extends to ensuring that masks and tests are readily available, as well as hospital beds for those in need.
