Cryptic Symmetry Records © is a South African based Psy-trance DJ and sound engineering group.
The brief on this project was very open, Cryptic contacted me and asked if i could create something "Gnarly, with skulls and stuff". I'm sure most illustrators wouldn't enjoy such an open brief, but having worked with Cryptic in 2008 i knew what sort of visuals the guy's would get excited about.
I based the concept on the "cryptic" aspect of the company name and focused predominantly on the idea of a skeleton key that would open a door to unknown worlds, much like what they aim to achieve with the music they produce. The Key concept also allowed for an easy visualization of symmetry as the design had to be balanced to look like a key.
Below you will see the initial concept sheet i created, followed by the work-flow of the key artwork from sketch to render.
