„Gönninger Samen“ – when ad men
         (and women) go gardening
How a rural tradition became an online shop and magazine

Gönningen is a small village at the foot of the Swabian Alb in Germany and was well-known as the metropolis for trading seeds for centuries. The german advertising agency Wagnerwagner from a town called Reutlingen is rooted in Gönningen as well. To keep the profession of trading seeds alive, as well as the own family traditions, the Wagner brothers founded the label „Gönninger Samen“ in November 2015.
The online shop Gönninger Samen offers high quality seeds for your own vegetable garden. In a small but carefully selected range of products you may find only one different kind per vegetable, which therefore has proven to be home grown easily and excellent in taste. In addition the online magazine showcases real digital gems across the gardening world and beyond – inspiring ideas, DIY craftsmanship and stunning art projects.

For the project realization the open source content management system Contao and the corresponding eCommerce solution Isotope were used. Isotope is designed for further development and uses the existing Contao framework. For our designers and developers this meant familiar coding standards, individual templates and great flexibility for the layout of the website, magazine and online shop. There were no other restrictions except: do what you like!

The resulting design is defined by the contrast between clear and consistent typography on the one side and a more flexible and organic grid for images on the other. The circle (inspired by little seeds) is one of the main design elements and is used continuously, primary for the user interaction elements. Subtle animations (loading animations, navigation, share-buttons, pagination of the magazine) are inspired by natural movements e.g. sowing and planting. Also several CSS and Javascript animations guide the user through the shop interface and improve the user experience.

The overall clean, subtle and natural color palette allows for the product photography and magazine images to be in focus. For maintaining a consistent imagery all photos are automatically underlayed with a stylized drop shadow (line texture inspired by furrows) and also overlayed with a „noisy“ texture and a cricle as a water-mark.

Of course the website is fully responsive and runs on your mobile device while your are waiting at a bus stop or you’re sitting on your couch at home.
