I wanted to explore the development of the paper pop up over time: seeing where it evolved from, and the form in which it began.
The form of the pop up, in its essence is a 3 dimensional form contained to a 2 dimensional base. This link between seemingly two very different worlds is what I wanted to explore. Pop-up is a craft that evolved from the written book, and takes it's ideas and intentions further. As a picture can represent an idea, the pop-up has the ability to express meaning and emphasis more than the written word alone.
I chose to explore the different forms and techniques of the pop-up by following a visual narration. I needed something that would lend itself to the visual nature of the pop-up form, and be able to be explored in a variety of different techniques. I wanted to use a relevant narrative that everyone would know, and therefore everyone could easily follow. For this I chose to focus this narrative on the original star wars movie, Star Wars: A New Hope. Through 8 animated pages, I explored the narrative of Star Wars in a minimalist approach. In this way I was able to focus my design on the forms and colours of each scene, distilling the structure down to the essence of it's narrative.

Between each of the 8 pop-up spreads, I included dividing spreads with dialogue from the movie relating to each scene. This division allows the viewer to see each form on its own, and appreciate each piece in its own visual weight without distraction.

The book itself is a modified accordion fold, allowing the pop-up forms to be read through as a book, or to be seen together as a linear progression of the story laid out.
