Typophoto

Typophoto was a visual research project following the studies of the most famous Hungarian artist: László Moholy-Nagy. (My university is also named after him.) I picked a line from his essay he wrote as a starting point to create an experimental typography in his spirituality but using modern devices. My chosen line was: The intervention of the photographic process has extended typography to a new dimensionality. For my experiments first I used my camera to take long exposures and for the second one I used an old broken monitor to capture it's screen with the texts on it. Using our group’s results the supervisor made a book and an exhibition about this whole project in 2015.

“Moholy-Nagy’s philosophy and essay entitled Typophoto is more up-to-date now than ever before. The digital world we are living in has reconstructed our relations to matter; the digital generation uses manual techniques with a new approach and instinctive openness. How does the new generation of artists reinterpret the contemporary relation of classical photography and typography? How do young artists represent Moholy-Nagy’s ideas today? How do they design typefaces in the new context of the spiritual heritage of Bauhaus? The exhibition mo_st_ showcasing a selection from the works of the students of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design along with a book premiére ventures to answer the above questions. A two-day workshop accompanies the exhibition.” Written by the supervisor/curator: Dóra Balla
