Goal: Improve brazing and finishing skills.
Equipment + Materials:
- scrap copper, copper sheet, square copper tubing
- grinding tools - belt, air-tool, scotch pad, 120 grit
- mill - 3/8" endmill
- braze booth w. fan
- torch - No. 2 & 4 tips, O2 + Acetylene
- solder - 15%, 30%, 45% Ag
- sand blaster
- acid bath - 2% HCl
Sand blasted and machined all contact surfaces to provide flush surface. Grinded away excess braze.
Applied flux and brazed pieces together. Right pic shows completed braze after acid dipping copper.
Brazed another loop on top of center loop. Used blocks to hold loop in place.
Brazed side legs together.
Brazed side legs onto top loop slot.
Brazed square tubing together to make football shape. Cutted tubing at angles and grinded ends down for smooth joint.
Completed base and football. Brazed football on top of side legs. Used fixture to hold football in place.
Brazed name plate onto trophy. Used copper sheet and stamped out letters with 3/8" punch before brazing. After braze is completed, it is acid dipped (pic 3) and excess solder is grinded down for good finish (pic 4). Trophy is sand blast one last time before applying varnish (pic 5).
Varnish is sprayed on to prevent corrosion/discoloration.
